Colca-Tal und Colca Canyon

Das letzte Wochenende hatte ich Gelegenheit, ins Colca-Tal zu reisen. Die Reise ging von Arequipa (2335 m ü. M.) ins Hochland über den Patapampa-Pass von 4910 m und auf der anderen Seite wieder hinunter nach Chivay (3635 m). Auf dieser Reise wechselt die Vegetation ständig (bis 4000 m wachsen noch Kakteen, anschliessend nur noch Büsche und Flechten) und man trifft Schafe, Lamas, Alpacas und Vicunjas an. Die Vicunjas sind freilebend und leben in einer Schutzzone, da ihr Bestand noch bis vor wenigen Jahren gefährdet war.
Der zweite Tag führte uns an den Rand des Colca-Canyons - einen Canyon von bis zu 1200 m Tiefe, von wo aus wir morgens Kondore im Flug beobachten konnten. Über verschiedene kleine Dörfer gelangten wir anschliessend wieder zurück nach Arequipa.
Das war gleichzeitig meine erste Erfahrung mit Höhen über 4000 m - auf der Passhöhe fühlt man sich schon etwas schwach, und bei Anstrengung beginnt der Kopf zu schmerzen. Das Mittel der Einheimischen ist es Koka-Blätter zu kauen, was ich auf der Überfahrt auch fleissig tat. Schmeckt ziemlich bitter, aber wenn es hilft...

Last weekend I had the chance to visit the Colca valley. The trip started in 2335m (Arequipa) and went to the highlands where we crossed the Patapampa Pass at 4910 m. On the other side of the pass the journey went to Chivay on 3635 m. During the trip the vegetation is changing constantly due to the altitude and you see sheep, lamas, alpacas and vicunyas. Vicunyas are not domesticated and live in a reserve.
The second day lead us to the colca canyon, a canyon of up to 1200 m depth, from where you can watch condors soaring in the morning hours. On the way back we visited a few of the small villages in the valley that mainly live from agriculture.
On this trip I made my first experience with altitudes above 4000 m - on 4900 m I felt quite week and it is wise to take it very easy, otherwise your head can start aching. The means of the locals is chewing coca leaves, something I did diligently during the crossing. Tastes quite bitter, but if it helps...
